A terminal is choreography at the scale of thousands of tonnes, and it is national infrastructure.

Cranes, carriers and gates are usually automated in isolation, each by a different supplier, each on its own schedule. The rhythm breaks under surges that a single coordinating system would absorb. And the software that runs a port too often answers to a jurisdiction other than the port's.

Container handling forgives nothing. Tolerances are measured in centimetres, all day, in all weathers.
