01The problem

Farms are a long way from data centres, and the season does not wait.

Precision agriculture has been promised for two decades, usually as a subscription that stops working when coverage drops at the far end of the field. Yield maps and field history, the inheritance of the farm, accumulate in a supplier's account rather than the farm's.

The machines are a mixed shed: a new harvester beside a tractor that has been reliable for twenty years. Intelligence sold with the newest machine leaves the rest of the shed exactly as it was.
